Signs and Symbols
"
Music is just a code!”

Music is written on the stave.

The stave has 5 lines.

If a note is written at the bottom of these lines it will sound low.

If a note is written at the top of these lines it will sound high.

As the notes get higher up the stave the stems point down, this is to keep the music looking neat.

Each stave begins with a bass clef.

The other thing you will see at the start of the music is a time signature.

The time signature tells us how many beats are in each bar and what kind of beats they are, we will talk about this more in Rhythm and Rests.

4      3
4      4

The stave is separated into bars with bar lines.

At the end of a piece of music you will see a final double bar.

This Piece is four bars long.
